Tailored and meaningful health messaging and materials will have a stronger impact in communities. NACDD partnered with tribal health leaders to promote colorectal health in American Indian and Alaska Native populations.
Supported by CDC, NACDD and Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research (KPCHR) engaged the Great Plains Tribal Leaders’ Health Board and South Puget Intertribal Planning Agency in an award winning Listening Sessions project.
Listening Sessions are a modified version of boot camp translation, a validated community-based participatory approach. The partnership brought together American Indian community members to develop culturally and locally relevant colorectal cancer screening messages and materials.
Use the Listening Session Guide to learn how to host a community engagement session to create tailored messages about colorectal health for American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
The Listening Session approach could be replicated by communities for other chronic disease reduction and health promotion purposes.
Every community has its own cultural, linguistic, and social context that impacts how an individual receives and acts on healthcare messages. Watch these videos from the Great Plains Tribal Leaders’ Health Board, the South Puget Intertribal Planning Agency, and the American Indian Cancer Foundation to see the impact of health promotion when messages are co-created with their intended audience.
"Stories are often used in Indigenous societies as a teaching tool. Stories allow listeners to draw their own conclusions and to gain life lessons from a more personal perspective...stories allow us to see others’ life experiences through our own eyes."
