NACDD’s Oral Health Team is on the Road Again

Group of experts sharing successful medical-dental integrations.

Nothing takes the place of in-person site visits to better understand how State Health Departments and their partners collaborate to create successful and meaningful program impacts. As part of its ongoing efforts to document successful medical-dental integration approaches in states, NACDD recently conducted in-person site visits to the five states funded under DP18-1810 Component 2. 

The learnings from these visits will help inform the development of state success stories that will showcase the work these five states have been doing to promote medical-dental integration despite the challenges they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

North Dakota
In September, NACDD visited North Dakota and met with six clinic partners located in Turtle Lake, Bismarck, Fargo, and Grand Forks to learn more about their hypertension screening program in dental clinics.
Connecticut
In June, we headed to Connecticut to visit with medical and dental clinic staff in three locations in the Hartford area to learn more about how pre-diabetes screenings are being conducted in the dental clinic and how bi-directional referrals between medical and dental are being managed by clinic care coordinators.
Colorado
A site visit in August to Colorado allowed our team to meet with two clinic partners in the Denver area to learn more about how hypertension and pre-diabetes screenings are being integrated into the workflows by the dental team in collaboration with the co-located medical team.
South Carolina
Our trip in mid-August to South Carolina allowed us to meet with the state’s medical-dental integration advisory committee and learn more about how primary care clinics in the state’s four regions are increasing awareness about the link between poor oral health and glycemic control in people with diabetes.
Virginia
During our end-of-August trip to Virginia, we met with a key state health department partner, Virginia Health Catalyst, to learn more about their efforts to promote Medicaid expansion to increase access to oral health services for adults in addition to meeting with three primary care partners that have developed a bi-directional referral process between their free-standing medical clinics and a local dental clinic in the Culpeper area.
