Advancing Employer Coverage for Diabetes Prevention: A Practical Tool for Public Health Action

Employers play a critical role in expanding access to evidence-based diabetes prevention and management services; yet many lack the knowledge, tools, or confidence to offer the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) as a covered health benefit. For state and territorial chronic disease programs working to increase reach, sustainability, and equity of diabetes prevention efforts, employer engagement represents a powerful, but often underutilized lever.

Healm: A healthier workforce starts hereTo support this work, NACDD developed Healm, an online, self-guided employer education platform designed to help organizations understand, design, and implement coverage for the National DPP lifestyle change program. Healm translates public health evidence into employer-ready language, guiding users step-by-step through benefit design considerations, implementation planning, and connections to CDC-recognized delivery organizations.

While Healm is built for employers, it also serves as a strategic resource for public health practitioners seeking scalable ways to engage the employer market without one-on-one technical assistance for every organization. State and local health departments can share Healm with employers, business coalitions, chambers of commerce, brokers, and other business influencers as a practical entry point into conversations about diabetes prevention coverage.

Healm aligns with key public health priorities, including:

  • Expanding coverage and utilization of evidence-based preventive services
  • Supporting sustainable financing and payment models for the National DPP
  • Reducing barriers to access for working-age adults at high risk for type 2 diabetes
  • Strengthening cross-sector collaboration between public health and the private sector
  • By equipping employers with clear, actionable guidance, tools like Healm help shift diabetes prevention upstream, embedding prevention into workplace benefits and reaching people where they spend much of their time.

Join one of our Healm 101 sessions to learn how public health practitioners strategically use Healm as part of employer outreach and engagement efforts. This session will provide an overview of the platform, examples of how states and partners are using Healm with employers, and practical tips for integrating it into existing employer-focused initiatives.
