At NACDD, our commitment to preventing type 2 diabetes is not only about developing strategies but about actively engaging states in a collaborative and strategic manner. Since 2011, we have employed a highly successful State Engagement Model, developed in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This model strategically involves working with states to engage key partners, develop tailored action plans, and foster a commitment to implementing diabetes prevention initiatives.
Experience and lessons learned from the State Engagement Model is now being leveraged to support the National DPP Bright Spot Initiative (BSI). BSI provides an opportunity for states and organizations to receive funding, peer-to-peer learning, and technical assistance from NACDD and CDCâs Division of Diabetes Translation to dramatically increase enrollment in the National DPP and MDPP through strategic partnerships that commit to specific enrollment goals for the general population and priority populations and track and share progress. Currently, there are five states participating in the BSI: Michigan, Missouri, Utah, Kansas, and Wisconsin.Â
The State Engagement Model has been so successful that it has been adapted for other public health priorities including diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES), colorectal cancer screening, and physical activity and nutrition.
Use learnings from the BSI to strengthen efforts to increase enrollment in the National Diabetes Prevention Program. Explore strategies around selecting and collaborating with backbone organizations and partner networks, and ways to center health equity and maximize collective impact.
