BRIC’s Efforts to Shine a Light on Equity through Statewide Trainings and Statewide Plans

Since 2021, NACDD’s Building Resilient Inclusive Communities (BRIC) program within the Center for Advancing Healthy Communities has funded 20 states to address food and nutrition security, safe physical activity access, and social connectedness through a policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) approach. Health equity and social justice principles are integrated throughout the training and technical assistance provided to BRIC states as well as states’ action plans. In the past two years, multiple BRIC states have planned statewide trainings for their partner networks on health equity to expand awareness around meaningfully operationalizing equity and advancing equity considerations in policymaking, and program planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Now in its third year, the BRIC program continues to support states and communities in infusing equity and inclusion into training efforts and conversations around policy. Visit the BRIC program webpage to stay connected to ongoing learnings and resources.

Specific examples from BRIC states are highlighted below.

The Illinois Public Health Institute

The Illinois Public Health Institute

Planned a two-part, virtual discussion series in September 2022 to explore how racism, oppression, and colonialism have shaped American food access and nutrition culture and what providers can do to challenge these systems. Registration for the series reached capacity at 300 and more than 150 individuals participated.

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH)

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH)

Partnered closely with the New York State Office of Aging (NYSOFA) to plan a series of health equity trainings for the state’s aging network, which includes over 90 organizations (e.g., NY Connects staff, Long Term Care Councils, Area Agencies on Aging staff). NYSDOH contracted with a health equity consultant on this work, conducted a thorough community assessment to inform the training design, and is producing online training videos in micro-modules to share with the Aging services network statewide.

The Pennsylvania State Department of Health

The Pennsylvania State Department of Health

Partnered with the Pennsylvania Department of Aging to plan training and technical assistance around equity for the state’s aging network (e.g., Area Agencies on Aging and senior centers). A survey was developed to inform the development of the training, with contracted technical assistance and support from Equitable Cities.

The Mississippi State Department of Health

The Mississippi State Department of Health

Hosted a training in September 2022 on walkability audits and community action planning for walkability, inclusion, and safety in partnership with Smart Cities. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS)

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS)

Collaborated with the Texas Health and Human Services Aging team to incorporate BRIC-related activities into both the State Aging Plan and the Obesity Prevention Program Strategic plan. Texas DSHS is participating in the Behavioral Health and Aging Workgroup, Social Connectedness subcommittee to provide a health equity and COVID-19 perspective to existing conversations around the development and implementation of the State Aging Plan.

The Hawaii Department of Health

The Hawaii Department of Health

Initiated a community-engaged process, collaborating with an organization that works with low-income communities, as well as Pacific Islanders, Filipinos, and Native Hawaiians, to draft culturally appropriate, equitable nutrition standards for five food banks across the state.
