How Does the “Health Debt” Impact Your Work?

Impact Brief CEO Message – January 2022

How does the “health debt” impact your work?
During NACDD’s sixth annual Program Success Showcase, we took a dive deep into discussions about the cumulative impact of missed preventive care and screenings due to the pandemic. The opening keynote featured messages from Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Dr. Peter Briss, Medical Director of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, followed by a discussion among: NACDD Board President Kristi Pier, NACDD Senior Director of Health Equity Robyn Taylor, and NACDD Director of Policy Liz Ruth, with past NACDD Board President Dr. Susan Kansagra moderating.

Health equity, racial equity, and the health debt are deeply intertwined topics, which was explored further in the closing panel discussions “On the Frontlines of the Backlog: State Health Departments and the Health Debt.” Panelists included: Dr. Kristine Andrews, co-Founder and Senior Director, Ideas to Impact and Visiting Distinguished Fellow, Child Trends; Dr. Jeanne Alongi, Vice President, NACDD Coordinating Center for Public Health Practice; Dr. Karen Hacker, Director, CDC National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion; and Glory Song, Epidemiologist, Massachusetts Department of Health; and Marti Macchi, Chief Program Strategy Officer, who moderated.

Kristi Pier also shared her President’s Challenge for 2022, which focuses on building resilience with consideration for the long-term trauma and inequity experienced by disparate groups, populations, and communities. (Watch the recent General Member Webinar on this topic.)

While we know we face continuing and great challenges from the pandemic and the health debt, as well as health equity, our Association is committed to help you, our Members, to position our field for success in saving lives and building healthier communities.

We recently created a new position at NACDD — Senior Director of Health Equity — to further our strategic goal of becoming an anti-racist public health organization. The role was carefully developed in response to continued widening health disparities among historically marginalized and oppressed communities. We’re excited to announce Robyn Taylor, MBA, one of our long-time consultants working in health equity, will serve in that role.

Taylor’s hiring is just one of many milestones NACDD has achieved in the past year as part of the Association’s investment in promoting racial and health equity and to address the root causes of health. Learn more about the highlights of our work advancing health and racial equity during the past year.

Watch recordings from the Showcase, with the complete material being added in the coming days.
