CEO Message: April 2025

As public health professionals, we know that change is inevitable—but so is our resilience. The recent reduction in force (RIF) at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is undoubtedly significant with implications on state public health programs that we are still unraveling.

What we do know is the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) RIF and reorganization has resulted in approximately 2,400 positions being affected at the CDC, with significant structural changes to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP). While these changes bring about uncertainty for both NACDD and our Members, one thing remains steadfast: our commitment to you and to the overall health of our nation.

Public health has always been a pillar of strength, adapting to challenges with determination. We saw this firsthand during the COVID-19 pandemic, when public health workers across the nation stepped up in extraordinary ways to protect and care for our communities. That same resilience will guide us through this moment as well, as we actively pursue opportunities to support our state partners and educate policymakers on the importance of your programs and funding.

In times like these, advocacy is paramount. NACDD is actively engaging behind the scenes—meeting with members of Congress, promoting sustained and increased funding for states, and ensuring that decision-makers understand the invaluable role of public health. We are committed to keeping you informed, supported, and equipped to navigate these transitions.

This week, as we commemorate the 30th anniversary of National Public Health Week (NPHW), now more than ever it is important to celebrate and lift up the achievements of public health. From promoting active, healthy lifestyles to reducing smoking and improving chronic disease management, to policies and initiatives that have led to safer food (as well as increased access to healthier food), clean air and water, and safer workplaces—public health saves lives and creates lasting change.

We encourage you to stay connected and engaged—remember the power of our collective voice. Be sure to sign up to receive our communications like the weekly Legislative and Policy Newsletter, which provides timely updates on what’s happening in Washington, DC and around the nation. Or join NACDD’s Center for Health Policy for a monthly policy webinar on the third Tuesday of each month (Register here).

The challenges we face today are not insurmountable. It is imperative we continue to push for policies that protect and invest in public health and its workforce, ensuring that the progress made is not only preserved but also advanced for future generations. As always, NACDD stands with you during this time of change in public health. Since 1988, we have worked to strengthen state and national leadership and expertise in the fight against chronic disease. Please reach out and let us know how we can support your unit. We are grateful for the work you do and celebrate you during National Public Health Week 2025!
