NACDD Receives New Funding Awards to Build Capacity for Commercial Tobacco Cessation in States

Atlanta, GA (September 27, 2024) – The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) is pleased to announce the successful receipt of two new grant funding opportunities from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The Building Capacity to Increase Commercial Tobacco Cessation funding opportunity will support state-level capacity building for evidence-based cessation interventions, prioritizing strategies that reach populations experiencing tobacco-related disparities. With 35 letters of support, including six from state health departments in Hawaiʻi, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia, NACDD was recently awarded two of the three total components of funding.

“NACDD is committed to supporting efforts to reduce and eliminate tobacco use in communities across the U.S., and I am proud that our work is being recognized through new funding and projects,” said NACDD CEO John W. Robitscher. “I’m privileged to work with a passionate team of individuals who are relentlessly committed to eliminating smoking and tobacco use.”

The new tobacco cessation projects will be housed in NACDD’s Center for Advancing Health Communities and will build upon our existing efforts as a Tobacco National Network for Reaching People with Disabilities. Component 2 of the new project will promote and support the implementation of health systems change initiatives that seek to integrate tobacco dependence treatment into routine clinical care across clinical settings. Component 3 will promote and support improvements to health insurance coverage for evidence-based tobacco cessation treatments (including individual, quitline, and group counseling, as well as FDA-approved medications).

“These new awards would not be possible without the expertise and dedication of our staff and collaboration with NACDD Members in state and territorial health departments,” added Robitscher. “The unwavering commitment to tobacco cessation and cross-sector collaboration exemplifies NACDD’s strong partnerships, driving our vision of a world where everyone can achieve their full health potential, free from the burden of chronic disease.”
