The Disability Network for
Tobacco Control and Cancer Prevention
About The Disability Network
NACDD is partnering with Lakeshore Foundation to advance the prevention of commercial tobacco use and cancer in populations experiencing tobacco- and cancer-related health effects with a focus on people with disabilities (PWD), including U.S. veterans. The Disability Network is supported by a five-year, CDC-funded cooperative agreement and brings together a consortium of nine national organizations to increase the delivery of tobacco control and cancer prevention strategies and related interventions.
People with disabilities are more likely to smoke than adults without disabilities and experience barriers to accessing cessation tools.
Disability Network Efforts
The “Disability Network” brings together national, state, and local partners focused on tobacco control and cancer prevention for people with disabilities. In addition to creating the Disability Network, NACDD established an advisory board and communities of practice (CoP) to support community-based policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) change; provide comprehensive training and technical assistance (T/TA); and support a mass-reach health communication strategy.
The strategies aim to:
Advance tobacco control and cancer prevention initiatives to accelerate the decline in commercial tobacco use;
Reduce the incidence/mortality of tobacco-related cancers; and
Address adverse health outcomes for people with disabilities including U.S. veterans
This diagram reflects the program infrastructure supporting the National Networks.
Training and Technical Assistance
Training and technical assistance (TA) opportunities address, but are not limited to: tobacco use, prevention, control, and cessation; PSE change strategies or innovative interventions that are proven to reduce tobacco-related cancers for PWD including U.S. veterans; and disability.
The Resource Library offers evidence-based and promising resources, tools, and information focused on intentionally including people with disabilities in tobacco control and cancer prevention.
