Where are you serving and what activities are you engaged in?
At the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH), I support the Physical Activity and Nutrition team. My main service project is to create a comprehensive resource that addresses the current status of food insecurity in Oklahoma, as well as evidence-based initiatives across sectors to combat food insecurity in Oklahoma. Examples of other projects that I am working on include developing a Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) repository and supporting a CHIP Training for community health workers.

How does the work you are engaged in influence public health?
My main service project focused on food insecurity addresses key social determinants of health such as socioeconomic status, the built environment, and access to nutrition and physical activity programs. The work that I am doing with the CHIP repository and CHIP Training will help communities assess and develop strategies to address community health challenges.
Ā
How does your work address health equity?
The state health departmentās role is to equip districts in Oklahoma with the skills they need to create opportunities for health and prosperity in their community. Through the CHIP work and sharing of resources, the hope is to empower community members to voice their ideas and help address the health-related needs of the community, as they are the ones who know the community best.Ā
