Where did you serve and what activities were you engaged in?
- During my service year with NACDD PHA program, I supported a non-profit organization called FoodShare South Carolina. The programās service area was Bennettsville, South Carolina and Marlboro County. Throughout the year, I got hands-on experience in areas of food insecurity, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), customer service, community engagement, and partnerships.
How did your service year prepare you for your new role as a Health Educator?
- As I take on a new role as Health Educator ā Community Health Specialist in Chesterfield County, I will be able to use the knowledge and skills I acquired during my service year. Engaging the community is a considerable part of my new role. While working with AmeriCorps and FoodShare, my ability to do that has only grown. I am beyond excited to continue improving surrounding communities through knowledge sharing, presentations, and engagement, while hopefully being able to see the change that our team brings.
What is your advice for individuals who are considering applying to be a Service Member?
- Believe in yourself. There were many times I doubted myself in my role and what to do next. In the end, I learned more about myself than I ever could have imagined. Take charge when in doubt, and the satisfaction will be unmatched!
