Who We Are
Physical inactivity and unhealthy eating are important chronic disease risk factors underlying a significant amount of preventable disease. NACDD initiatives related to these topics are supported through NACDD Councils and freestanding projects.
NACDD’s action on focuses on effective policy and environmental changes at local, state and national levels. NACDD participates as a member of the planning team for national and regional conferences such as Weight of the Nation, provides relevant training and resources and works with Affiliate partners to identify the needs of state health departments related to obesity prevention.
NACDD has formed a Physical Activity Collaborative with the National Society of Physical Activity Practitioners in Public Health (NSPAPPH) and the Physical Activity Prevention Research Network (PAPRN). This collaboration will work to do the following:
- Work with state and local chronic disease programs to build support and develop partnerships to improve physical activity and reduce chronic illness.
- Work with the NSPAPPH and PAPRN to develop national level policy for funding of public health physical activity interventions and appropriate placement of physical activity practitioners within state health agencies.
- Efforts complement NACDD recipient activities in obesity prevention, ACHIEVE, school and community health.
NACDD Councils initiate many nutrition-related projects. For example:
- The Cardiovascular Health Council (CVHC) engaged NACDD as a formal partner in the National Salt Reduction Initiative.
- A multi-Council group developed a set of recommendations on actions to address hypertension.
- The Health Equity Council developed the Community Action Guide: Changing Food Deserts into Food Oases – A Resource for States and Communities.
Health professionals who look to increase physical activity and reduce the burden of chronic illness.

NACDD works collaboratively with the CDC Division of Laboratory Sciences/National Center for Environmental Health on a project to develop Dietary and Nutritional Indicators that have program and policy implications for state health agencies, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
