Generate, Educate, Activate, Respond (GEAR) Groups

2016

Group 1: GEAR Up For Understanding Chronic Disease Data and Methods for Communicating Impact

The GEAR Group for chronic disease data and methods explored chronic disease data, levels of evidence and methods for analyzing and presenting data. Participants also shared experiences in data surveillance, analysis, and presentation.Participants received presentations on data visualization, return on investment, working with media small area estimation, health system quality improvement initiatives, and other topics selected by the GEAR Group. The group prepared a document for NACDD’s Chronic Disease Practitioner Network providing examples of state uses of chronic disease data, including demonstrating return on investment (ROI). GEAR Group 1 reviewed published literature and explored professional development recommendations for chronic disease and health promotion staff.

Group 2: GEAR Up for Community Benefit

Team members learned about the IRS Community Benefit requirement and how it links to their state and local partners. The group explored how it enhances collaboration and outreach within states to further their partnership efforts to reduce chronic diseases and its risk factors.

Group 3: GEAR Up for Understanding Healthcare Payment Reform

This group addressed how public health needs to understand payers and payment reform in the context of population health management. This included a review of common language, understanding the public payers, commercial payers, what is driving the reform and how the payment system is changing to accommodate this, as well political and financial challenges. The team discussed how public health can get to the table and contribute to the dialogue including how to engage with health systems and payers.

Group 4: GEAR Up to Communicate the Value of Public Health

Team members shared state and local examples of public health and health system goals that are aligned for mutual benefit and identified key messages that communicate the value of public health. Team members shared the frameworks and tools they have used to make the case for public health to key audiences and partners.

Group 5: GEAR Up for Health Equity

This group focused on strategies to integrate health equity into all aspects of state chronic disease and health promotion programs. Team members shared and built upon lessons learned to approach chronic disease prevention with a health equity lens.
