Bridging Practice and Research to Advance Evidence for Action

Evidence-based decision-making is at the heart of all NACDD work and Member offerings. We celebrate our Members as they innovate and generate practice-based knowledge every day, and we are a champion for bringing evidence, in all its forms, to public health practice.

Strengthening the connection between practice and research is ongoing work. We encourage Chronic Disease Units and researchers to get to know each other’s work, communicate regularly, and work together to build and sustain the cross-sector partnerships necessary for advancing health equity through systems change.

NACDD is part of several projects with CDC to advance the connection between research and practice. We offer a number of ways Members can learn about and shape the future of chronic disease prevention and management through research and evaluation.

Generate, Educate, Activate, Respond: Understanding Publications, known as “GEAR UP,” journal discussions are held every third Thursday of the month at 3 p.m. ET for 30 minutes. Articles and podcasts for discussion are selected from the peer-reviewed literature, such as Preventing Chronic Disease and the American Journal of Public Health, and mainstream media like Harvard Business Review. Learn more about the Monthly Journal Club.

The Prevention Research Center in St. Louis offers an Evidence-based Public Health (EBPH) course to the membership of NACDD. The training provides a solid foundation for evidence-based decision-making by public health practitioners working in chronic disease prevention and control. Learn more about the Evidence-Based Public Health Course.

The purpose of this Thought Leader Round Table was to facilitate discussion between Chronic Disease Units, Prevention Research Centers, and national partners to learn from one another about how to advance evidence-based public health practice and chronic disease prevention. The Round Table produced a set of recommendations for increasing active collaboration between Chronic Disease Units, Prevention Research Centers, and national partners.

This CDC-funded project was carried out to identify opportunities to improve connections between the Prevention Research Centers, Chronic Disease Units, and other practitioners.

This CDC-funded project sought to highlight key insights on successful research translation. Insights were captured via interviews with seven CDC selected Prevention Research Centers and shared via short written snapshots.

This CDC-funded project seeks to support other Prevention Research Centers in replicating the Evidence-Based Public Health Course offered by the Prevention Research Center in St. Louis.

NACDD generated case examples will explore various perspectives on bringing evidence to practice and developing practice-based evidence through chronic disease prevention work.
