HEC Work Groups
Advocacy Work Group
The Advocacy Work Group (AWG) was established in 2008 with the goal of addressing the following HEIG Strategic Priority: Influence Policy and Practice, Develop an advocacy plan and call to action. HEIG leadership developed 3 frameworks for addressing HEIG issues–one of which was an advocacy framework. The responsibility of the workgroup is to develop an action plan based on the framework and implement the plan. The AWG is committed to advancing federal, state, and local actions toward eliminating the social, policy and environmental conditions which lead to health inequities. The AWG consists of three committees that meet on a weekly basis to bring completion to their projects.
Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Standards Work Group
The CLAS Standards Work Group seeks to identify what states care about most regarding CLAS; examine how well states are prepared to understand and improve CLAS within existing programs, initiatives, contracts, etc.; and finally outline an agenda for what can be done to help states.
Cultural Competency Work Group
The Cultural Competency Work Group (CCWG) facilitates adoption of standardized health equity-related definitions. The CCWG works to assure a diverse organizational membership and a cultural competency inclusive training policy. Additionally, CCWG advocates the inclusion of cultural competency in public health accreditation systems and standards.
Social Determinants of Health Work Group
The Social Determinants of Health Work Group (SDOH) provides training to NACDD members on the social determinants of health and their impact on health disparities. Post-training on-going technical assistance is available to members. The Work Group promotes Unnatural Causes and has developed resources that compliment the series, including Unnatural Causes Success Stories and an outline of the Unnatural Causes toolkit. Other workgroup activities include identifying SDOH resources and developing objectives to expand SDOH efforts in public health practice.
